Python heeft nu twee takken, Python 2.x en Python 3.x. Python 2.x is verouderd omdat de definitieve versie 2.7 in 2010 uitkwam. Python 3 werd in 2008 geïntroduceerd en heeft de nieuwste versie als 3.6.4 (vanaf januari 2018).
