How to Disassemble and Inspect a Turbocharger

In this video, I show you how I separate a turbocharger. This is the stock JCW turbocharger from my 2009 Mini Cooper. It has over 100k km’s on it and it is indeed used. I will be splitting the turbocharger from the cartridge and showing you how to inspect it.

If you’re looking to refurbish your turbocharger, you can purchase a replacement cartridge, which will in essence make it perform like a brand new turbo. This is a cost effective way to get around from buying a new turbocharger from a dealer, especially a genuine replacement part. The cheapest price I found for a Genuine JCW turbo is over $1500. While you’re replacing the cartridge, you can install a better one to improve the characteristics of the turbo, while also reducing turbo lag.
