How to Restore and Protect Your Metal Parts With Evapo-Rust Solution
ChannelBasin MotorsportsDescription from the creator
One of the recent restoration projects at Basin Motorsports has been to swap on a set of 1995 Mustang GT front spindles instead of the 4-lug stock Foxbody Mustang parts. The 1995 parts were terribly rusty and the hubs wouldn't turn well if at all due to rust. After getting the rusty parts off (including the hubs and brake dust covers), I needed to restore the spindles themselves.
I purchased a 3.5 gallon tub of Evapo-Rust solution in order to soak the spindles in. Evapo-Rust offers a 32-ounce bottle, a 1-gallon (64-ounce) bottle, the 3.5 gallon bucket / tub, and a 5-gallon bucket. I needed at least 2-gallons of the solution to cover the spindle in a 5-gallon plastic bucket. It was just a few bucks more for the 3.5-gallon bucket, it included a plastic basket for parts, and it comes in a handy storage container. I was sold on the purchase, but the true test was how the solution actually worked.
I read through the instructions found on the bucket label and it all seemed pretty simple. Soak the parts for a time period, then rinse them off and check them. I started with a 2-hour soak and it didn't do enough on the rusty surface. I then soaked them overnight with better success. The solution bonds to the surface a little bit and traps the rust. You just need to rinse the part and slightly scrub it to get the jellied solution off. I still wasn't happy with the results after one night in the solution, so I did soak the parts a second night.
The picture and video probably don't do the solution enough justice. I am impressed with the solution. It did 98% of the work to get these spindles back to OEM quality. I would recommend the solution to anyone interested in it, and just keep soaking and rinsing with a simple scrub until you are happy with the results.
