Relays are becoming used more and more on modern cars, providing the ECU with control over pretty much every single electrical device & circuit on the car.

They do fail though & knowing how to test them can save you $$ in diagnostic charges....lets face it, a relay is cheap, labour isn't!

So, with the help of Tool Girl Jade we run through the basics of identifying each of the 4 pins, working out which pair is for the 'trigger' circuit & which are for the load side.

Included is a circuit diagram of the relay's internals to help you visualize what's going on inside the relay & how it really works. Knowing this really helps with diagnostics.
