Duolingo and Google Translate? Isn’t this a bit odd? Why should I use Google Translate when Duolingo show me the meaning of words when I tap them or hover the mouse over them?
I agree, that Duolingo showing the meaning of the words in the sentences is extremely useful. There would be no need for Google Translate if I only studied languages in pair with my native tongue, which is Hungarian. Well, there is only one Duolingo language course available for speakers of Hungarian, and this is the Hungarian-English language tree. I completed it, of course, and the reverse-tree as well, which is Hungarian for native speakers of English.
Do I need Google Translate for Duolingo if I study a foreign language in pair with my mother tongue?
Well, I think not necessarily. In this case I am very sure about what every word means. No need to re-check or security-check the meaning in Google Translate. Duolingo covers this for us just fine.
There is one case, though, when I find looking up the meaning of words or sentences from Duolingo in Google Translate useful. I tell you next:
What happens, when I do a Duolingo language course with two languages from which neither one is my mother tongue?
Now this is it. The question suggests the answer: when I am not 100% sure of the meaning of a sentence or word in my mother tongue, even though I can translate it to the target language, I ask my good friend Google for assisstance. I will tell you right away, but here is a short chain of thoughts about target languages in the above mentioned situation:
What is the target language in Duolingo in case of a language course involving 3 languages?
First, there is no course on Duolingo that involves 3 languages. Here is how I mean this:
So, if I am participating in a Duolingo course that has two languages other than my native tongue, which one is the target language? If neither in the Duolingo course is my mother tongue, that kinda makes both a target language. I define it like this, for example: let’s say I am studying at the (I don’t know if ’at’ is correct here) Russian-German Duolingo course, than it makes German my target language and Russian my mother tongue. This is of course only a theory to be able to name the languages. If I told you I am fluent in Russian at the moment, not to say that I was born in Russia, that would be не верно (not true). I would be lying a bit less if I said German is my mother tongue, as I know German way better than Russian.
So, in case of a Duolingo course involving 3 languages, one being my mother tongue and the other 2 being both target languages (can this even get any more confusing? LOL), I think another possible correct solution would be that we have 2 target languages. That’s all, you can say it in a way that you find the closest to your thinking. The point is to actually take action and study languages.
And now let’s get back to the real topic of my video.
How do I use Google Translate efficiently with Duolingo?
For a while I prefet learning with Duolingo on my tablet. If you feel the same, I recommend you to download Google Translate app (or you the Chrome plugin on your PC).
Now you can do what I showed you in my video:
1. tap the screen where the Duolingo sentence is
2. choose ’select all’ from the pop-up menu
3. select ’translate’ option
4. and there you go: you are in Google Translate app and you can check the meaning of the sentence in your native language.
This way you can make 100% sure that you really know the meaning of the sentence of the two(!) target languages.
I realized that I could learn words in Spanish and Russian, for instance, but was not sure in their meanings. I just tapped the pairs. This is also good, I mean to know the pairs in 2 difficult languages, but I strongly recommend that the best is to attach a meaning to it. Without meaning the word pairs are just some pictures that you recognize and put in pairs. It might come in handy, though, if you find yourself reading a text or watching a movie that has these words, and it is good that you are already familiar with them to a certain extent. You might even find out their meanings from the context.
