How to add a friend on Facebook

Hi Paul here from PRwilson Media. So you've set up a Facebook account but you haven't yet made any connections. You haven't added anyone as a friend. Facebook will helpfully point you to the find friends that I've got here some people you might know based on the email address you've entered all this kind of stuff. But it's better to take charge of the process yourself. And I'll show you how you do that. Here we go.

So first things first. You know a couple of friends that are already on Facebook and you want to go and find them. So you go to the search bar and then type in the name you are looking for. So there's somebody potentially to connect with and you've got this button here. Add friend. Or as it says here send a friend request, or here add friend. So if you think ok, I'll go ahead and just click add friend what happens. Friend request sent.

So a little bit hasty because it would be nice to actually say hello first , actually introduce yourself and why you want to connect, instead of just instantly sending the request. So what you can actually do (luckily) is cancel the request say "cancel request" and unless that person has checked with the last 5 seconds or whatever that they've got a notification that they've had a friend request you should be ok. So here's another option. Well first of all there's a brand new one called "hello" where you can click on there and that basically sends some kind of a wave to Paul's profile. The next one that you should really think about is the message. So click message. Now they may have a setting so that they don't allow messages but assuming this is there you can send an introduction so "Hi Paul would be great to add you.

THen hopefully they will pick that up and in the meantime you can go ahead and click add friend. So I'll do that, the friend request is now sent and now it's a waiting game to see if there's a response from the other person.

Now because you are brand new on Facebook you haven't any friends a lot of people have their settings so that only friends of friends are allowed to send invites. So until you've got your first friend it's quite difficult to connect with certain people. So for example, if I look at this user name Jane smith and go to her profile there's no add friend button. There's just the message button.

And the only other options are report or block. So send a message is your best option there. So now I'm going to login as Paul and see the notification that's come through. And you can see it there - one friend request from Peter Wilkins so click on that. If you are not interested you could say delete request and as it says there the sender won't be notified that you deleted it. And you could optionally the specify why you don't know this person, all these kind of reasons. But if you are happy to go ahead you click confirm. Straight away another option has come up saying he's got one friend now, can you help him find more. So you can say suggest friends. And when I go through to look at Peter's profile I can say here suggest friends. You can pick from a list of all your friends or just ones in a particular area that that person might now and just say suggest friend.

Now that won't automatically send the friend request it will just say these are suggested people and it's up to the person at the other end to send a friend request to Peter. Be cautious with that , don't do too many suggest friends. I've seen user accounts get suspended because they've done that too often in a short space of time. So be patient , they should get some other people suggested to them now that they have made one connection. So they are already underway. Really that's it.
