I have found that student's techniques for answering questions often seems to take a back seat because of the perceived emphasis on learning all the facts about everything throughout the course.

Whilst knowing about the subject is vital, it's only half of the battle in scoring well in an exam. You need to be able to put your knowledge on the paper in a convincing way to make your point.
