To build rustic trails, first visualize where the trail will go in the landscape. Use deer trails and natural features as a starting point. Cut back any plants that are too close to the path and dig up roots on the trail surface. If the path is on a slope, remove soil from the uphill side and add it to the downhill side. You may need to reinforce the downhill banks with logs and stakes. Keep the trails free of weeds with a weed whacker, I like the old fashioned hand tool for this job, and soon mosses and other low growing ground-covers will take hold. Wildlife love these rustic trails and so will you!
