The Charleston. Where did it come from?

The Charleston is one of the most influential dances in American culture and one of the foundations of jazz dance.

Many historians trace its roots to the Juba (or Djouba) dance, brought from the Kongo region of Africa to the American South by enslaved Africans. Over time, these rhythms and movements evolved into what we now know as Charleston.

The dance exploded in popularity during the 1920s. A major turning point came when African American dancer and choreographer Elida Webb Dawson introduced the Charleston in Runnin’ Wild (1923), a groundbreaking Black Broadway musical that helped launch the worldwide Charleston craze.

Like many African American vernacular jazz dances, Charleston is much more than a collection of steps. It is a dance of rhythm, groove, improvisation, individuality, and joy.
