What is hazardous waste? Hazardous waste is any gas, liquid, or solid used in the home labeled with the words caution, warning, danger, poison, toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive and poses a health threat to people, animals, and the environment due to the chemical nature.

You can drop it off at one of two city-approved locations for free, or you can have it picked up at your home for at $10 charge. For more information, check the city website at carlsbadca.gov/services/environmental/trash/haz…

Other types of household hazardous waste includes motor oil and used filters, batteries, antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline, transmission fluid, glue, adhesives, paint, varnish and stains, paint remover and thinner, turpentine, car cleaners, electronic waste, sharps and needles, pharmaceuticals, household cleaners, floor care products, drain openers and cleaners, bleach, bug sprays, pest traps, ammonia-based products, bathroom cleaners, disinfectants, hair sprays and dyes, hair removers, isopropyl alcohol, mercury thermometers, nail polish, nail polish removers, carpet cleaners, floor cleaners, dust and furniture polish, chlorine and other pool chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, and weed killers

E-waste containing lead, mercury, cadmium and other materials that harm people and their environment including computer monitors, televisions, video cameras with cathode ray tube or picture tube, cell phones, batteries, printers, fax machines, some toys, are also considered hazardous waste. The City of Carlsbad has a separate program to help you dispose of e-waste properly.
