Why do we need half halts and how do we do them? A half halt is an energy stabilser. When you ride your legs create energy, the drive the horse forward. If we create this energy and don't contain it with our hands, our horse speeds up and will be on the forehand and become heavy. We need to balance this energy with our hands, which can be thought of as brakes.

Nervous riders that ride too much with hands, pull on these brakes and prevent the horse from moving forward enough. So the hands need a balance of controlling forward and a touch of brake.

So how do we do this? Step 1 is to create energy, going forward. So with a connection with the horse you'll catch that energy in your hand with a very slight movement of the hand (seen in video) using the outside rein.

Enjoy Natasha's detailed explanation and then go and apply this in your riding. Have fun and until next time, happy riding :)
