Description from the creator

This is a quick and easy beginners guide to creating digital cartoon clip art.
I used a Wacom graphics pen and tablet and Sketchbook Pro 8.6 to create this speed painting tutorial.

In real-time, this illustration took approximately 25 minutes.

I use this technique to create clip art illustrations.

The steps used in this tutorial are outlined below:

1. Sketch a cartoon on paper, photograph or scan it into your computer.

2. Open Sketchbook Pro 8, and change the canvas size to 3000 x 3000 pixels: IMAGE, CANVAS SIZE.

3. Check the resolution is correct: EDIT, PREFERENCES, CANVAS, RESOLUTION - 300DPI. (This will ensure that your illustration is of a high quality resolution.)

4. Add your pencil sketch: FILE, ADD IMAGE.

5. Stretch or shrink the sketch to fit the canvas.

6. Lower the opacity on your sketch layer.

7. Drag "layer 1" so that it sits above your sketch. (This is your outline layer.)

8. Change colour to black and choose 'Felt Pen' - resize to 3.0.

9. Use 'Steady Stroke' tool to create smooth lines. Size 11 was used for most of this drawing.

10. Zoom in and begin drawing your outlines. Only draw on the top layer (above your sketch.)

11. Zoom out and hide the sketch layer to check progress.

12. Use the 'Inking Pen' to paint in larger black areas, such as the eyes.

13. For whiskers, I used a longer Steady Stroke - '46' for extra control.

14. Once line art is complete, add a new layer below you outline layer. (This is your colour layer.)

15. On your outline layer, use the 'Magic Wand' select tool -tolerance at 230.
Use the 'Add' select tool to choose multiple selections for the same colour.

16. On the colour layer, use the 'Flood Fill' tool (with tolerance at max 255) to fill the selections.

17. Deselect the area. On outline layer, repeat the process, filling selections with colour on the layer beneath your line art.

18. Change background colour to bright green to check for any spots you have missed.

19. Your clip art illustration is complete.
To save with a transparent background, hide the background layer and save as a PNG file.
I also save my illustrations as JPEG files with a white backgrounds.
