How to draw Manga Head (Tutorial for Beginners)
ChannelPhiphiDescription from the creator
This is a drawing tutorial about How to Draw ANIME HEADS for BEGINNERS! It is really basic and explains some concepts like thinking in 3D and deconstruction in simple shapes. This will help you to draw manga head from any angle. It also mentions some proportions of an average anime face (preteen girl/boy). This tutorial is not a step by step, it showcases some ideas you have to keep in mind when drawing. Because these concepts are general, you can also use them to draw other things than the head! These concepts are simplified to focus on the external appearance of what you draw (so no real anatomy).
There will be other tutorials that covers the face in more details, and so, by following this DRAWING TUTORIAL SERIES, you will be able to DRAW ANY KIND OF FACES/HEADS that you want. The channel is focused on manga style, but a lot of concepts covered in these tutorials can be applied regardless of your art style. TUTORIALS will be released at least 1 per WEEK. Make sure to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE if you like the content and don't want to miss future uploads! There are also other kinds of drawing videos on this channel, such as timelapses, check them out!
EDIT: The fineliner is in fact 0.45mm, the "05" written on the pen confused me haha

When it comes to drawing MANGA HEADS, you can THINK OF A BOX first. It's a simple shape that you can move around fairly easily (easier than a head with all the details, at least). Once you are comfortable with this idea, you can divide the head in 2 parts: the ball-shaped SKULL and the triangular JAW. As showcased in the video, if you have hard time to visualize shapes in space, you can make some quick paper models to have a rough idea of how lines and shapes are placed when you move the head.
For a generic preteen anime character, there are some average PROPORTIONS to have in mind:
- At 1/2 of the head, you have the EYES
- From here the NOSE is placed at another 1/2
- Then from here, the MOUTH is placed at 1/3
- Finally, the EARS are place between the eyes and nose heights.
And that's it! Now you know how to draw a manga head from any angle! Looking up or down, side view, that should be possible! Of course it needs some practice, take your time to digest all the information.

It is better to not care about the results, especially after just this one tutorial. I advise FOCUSING ON LEARNING and on the process. It is a good mindset to have, so you keep the drive for drawing (and it also helps improving faster, never underestimate that!). And that's partially why I created this Youtube channel, to focus on learning (and teaching by the same time). It is okay to fail and make mistakes, as long as you practice, you'll move forward!
As mentionned in the video, I RECOMMEND checking drawabox.com (completed by a youtube channel, link below). Doing these exercises help improving your pen control and sense of space. My tutorials are more focused on subjects to draw. So if you want to train yourself to draw smooth lines in one stroke, this is THE reference.

Even though I have been drawing for a few years now, I learn a lot by following these lessons. It's worth giving a try! :)

I'm Phiphi and I draw in anime / manga style! I've been posting my drawings on the Internet for a few years now, my main social media being Twitter: twitter.com/PhiphiAuThon
I created this Youtube channel because I wanted to relearn everything about drawing, as I felt that my process has big flaws. I'm usually drawing on a tablet, so going back to traditional medium after a few years is quite challenging, but I'm really enjoying going back to my roots. Ultimately, I want to make my own comic series, and I have a lot to learn to reach that goal. And I thought it would be great to share my knowledge with this channel as well!
Hopefully you will join me on this art journey!
