Description from the creator

Port is a festive favourite, but do you know your LBV from your tawny? Our Master of Wine, Dawn, gives you the lowdown on the key styles, what they taste like and how to enjoy them.

Port is a fortified wine that can only be made in the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. These are the most common styles:

Ruby Port
This spends no time in oak and is best drunk young. Very juicy and fruity, it’s the perfect match for blue cheeses such as Stilton.

LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) Port
Late Bottled Vintage ports (also known as LBVs) are aged in oak barrels for 4-6 years, adding depth and complexity. Drink them with chocolate desserts.

Vintage Port
Only made in the best years, Vintage port spends a long time ageing in bottle and can age for decades; the best examples are sublime. Remember that most vintage ports will need decanting, as they contain natural sediment in the bottle.

Tawny Port
Aged in large wooden barrels, tawny ports have a much nuttier character and notes of dried fruit. Most tawnies will have an age statement on the bottle. They are great with paté or Comté cheese, and delicious served lightly chilled.

Remember – Port is not just for Christmas!
