Since you're going to be putting your mind and your wallet in the hands of someone you don't know, you really need to make a determined effort to find a good hypnotherapist. The best place to start is your family doctor. Make an appointment and discuss this with him or her, because your doctor will probably be able to help you find a qualified hypnosis professional, preferably an MD or psychologist. If you hit a dead-end here, call your local medical board, department of health, or medical referral agency. They will almost certainly have information you can use to find a qualified hypnotherapist. Failing that, you'll have to search the yellow pages under hypnotherapy, or ask at a New Age store or large health food store. Once you find someone, ask for their credentials and how long they've been practicing. Find out who trained them and what hypnosis governing bodies or organizations they belong to. Ask what they specialize in too. There's no point hiring a phobia specialist if you're looking for pain management. Don't be afraid to ask for 3 references and follow up with them. Trust your gut sense or intuition here. It doesn't matter what someone's qualifications are if you don't like them or they make you feel uncomfortable. So shop around, and if they do a lousy job, fire them and find someone else. Do your homework! There's enough good hypnotherapists out there that you don't need to settle for an inept amateur or worse.
