Auriga in Ancient Mythology

The story of this constellation is connected to Erichthonius, one of the most ancient kings of Athens.

According to the myth, Erichthonius sprung from the earth itself. He was raised by the goddess Athena and, when he grew up, he defeated Amphictyon, the usurper ruler of Athens, becoming king himself. He was the inventor of the quadriga (four-horse chariot), which he used in his battle against Amphictyon and in many games and competitions.

Honoring his heroic deeds, Zeus raised him in his chariot into the night sky.
