There are many ways to get a weather brief. For those of us with Foreflight we have a powerful tool at our disposal. You can use Foreflight to get a complete, accurate and legal weather brief.

With any tool, though, garbage in is garbage out. You need to establish a flow so you don't miss anything.

In this video I will show you the flow I use:

-Departure airport: METAR, TAF, MOS and Winds Aloft
-Arrival airport: METAR, TAF, MOS and Winds Aloft
-Click on Maps at the bottom and choose either Sectional or IFR low/high charts
-Start at the top of the imagery with "Radar" and go to the bottom to "Lightning"
-Next go to imagery. At a minimum make sure you look at: Radar, Icing, Turbulence, IFR charts and Convective SIGMETS. You can also check out lowest freezing levels, Latest Surface Analysis and Composite with Tops.

Additional Tips:

-Hit play on the Radar overlay to get a feel for the overall wind direction
-Click on the shaded TFR or AIRMET/SIGMET to get specific information to include local times, severity and type (ie, icing, turbulence)
-Save the imagery that relates to your area of the country in your favorites for easy access next time
-Foreflight will email you the official weather brief after you file, just make sure you opened the email so you have access to it outside of cell phone range.
-Weather briefs are void after an hour and a half even if you brief yourself.
-Check the weather again right before you start up your aircraft.
-Double check you have downloaded all the charts for your route of flight
-When weather is marginal please call 1-800-WX-Brief as a supplement to what you see in Foreflight. The briefers are trained and will catch anything you may have missed.
