Once you know which surety bond is relevant for you, you need to find out how to get bonded. Here are the various steps to the process.

Since there are many different types of surety bonds, what is guaranteed by each bond may differ. However, there are a few things that apply to all bonds.

To get bonded, first you need to find out who your obligee is. For example, for auto dealers that’s their respective states’ DMV. That’s why these bonds are sometimes referred to as DMV bonds.

Once you know who your obligee is, you contact a surety bond agency, such as Lance Surety Bonds. What the surety bond agency does is to find you the best deal for each bond because they work with lots of bonding companies. Working with an agency therefore increases your chances of getting the bond in the first place.

The prices of surety bonds are not fixed. Different surety bonds have different total bond amounts required from their principals. And even though the total amount for each bond is fixed, the price (also called premium) that each principal pays may vary.

Surety bonds are much like a line of credit given to your business. The bonding company needs certain information about you and your business to determine whether to give you that credit and at what rates.

That information depends on the nature of your business. For example, some of the factors auto dealers need to provide are: number of cars on the lot, business location and years of experience.

But the most important factor (and that holds true for all surety bonds) is the personal credit score of the principal. A bank is much more likely to lend you money if your credit score is sound and the same is true for surety bonds companies.

Getting bonded is not complicated. In fact, the whole thing can be done online. In just a few simple steps you will be able to enter all the needed information, find out if you are approved and even get a quote on your premium.
