Growing Papaya is easy to do.
Take the seeds from your Papaya Fruit and wash them clean.
Let them air dry for 24 hours.
Once they are dry you will want to place them in a baggie
then put them in to the refrigerator and store them for 3 weeks.
This will bring in dormancy and help increase germination success.
Papaya is a perennial plant that grows in tropical and subtropical climates
that have no chance of frost or freezing temperatures.
Some species can grow as tall as 30' feet or 9 meters.
Most have attractive orange, yellow or cream colored flowers.
Papayas thrive in USDA hardiness zones 9-11,
which corresponds to minimum winter temperatures of 19 degrees Fahrenheit to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (or -7 degrees Celsius to 4 degrees Celsius)
Papaya trees do poorly in wet soil so you will want to plant them in a well-draining location.
Sprouting or germinating your papaya seeds is easy
with our Paper Towel Method or even our Perlite Method to seed germination.
I have linked the videos down below if you have not seen them before.
We highly recommend using one of those methods to start the papaya seeds.
You may plant seeds directly into your garden to avoid the risks of transplanting them later.
Or you may plant them in pots to have greater control of plant arrangement
once you see which ones are sprouting.
Plant the seeds 1/2" inch or 1.25 centimeters under the surface
and about 2" inches or 5 centimeters apart from each other.
Each papaya sprout you get will either be male or female or hermaphroditic.
There is no feasible way to tell whether aplant is male, female, or hermaphroditic before planting.
Water thoroughly after planting, but do not soak to the point that standing water forms on the soil.
Monitor the moisture over the next few weeks and water as necessary,
keeping the soil slightly damp, but not soggy.
Keep at least 5 plants for a 96% chance or higher
to produce both male and female trees.
Once plants are flowering remove excess male plants.
If you have more plants than you want to end up with
wait until the plants are about 3' feet or .9 meters tall to see what gender each plant is.
The male plants should flower first producing long thin stalks
with several flowers.
Female flowers are larger and near the trunk.
In order to produce fruit you only need one male plant per 10-15 females.
The rest can be removed.
Some papaya plants are hermaphroditic.
Meaning the produce both male and female flowers.
These plants can pollinate themselves.
Make sure not to over water the papaya plants as standing pools of water can damage them.
