Transcript: How to grow onion seeds. Greetings my name is Hank and today we're going to grow onion seed step-by-step from year
to year. Onion seed takes three years to complete the full cycle from seed to seed. Most people buy onion sets when they decide to grow onions that's because it takes an entire year to get that little onion bulb which will mature into a complete onion in one season. When I plant onions from seeds, I start in the late summer and sow the seeds in a row tightly in a thick Bunch. Most onions will make it through winter safely. Here in zone 5 I leave my onions outdoors all winter, but if you do live in a colder climate you may want to think about taking the onions indoors. When spring comes around again my onions have grown into a perfect sized bulb. I simply dig them up transfer them to a new row, water them in
and grow them like I would in any other season. Once my onions are mature I harvest them in the fall and store them in a cool dry room indoors or in an underground cellar. In order to grow my own onion seed I will have to plant full-sized onions again in the spring. I recommend only using one kind of onion for growing seed. If you use more than one different type of onion those two onions will most likely cross and give you a strange hybrid onion. I also recommend using at least 12 specimens when making seed in any type of plant. Using less than 12 specimens can weaken your gene pool and if done year after year will eventually lead to inbreeding. The Onions will bloom and be pollinated by many insects. Since onions are insect pollinated you do have to worry about cross-pollination from neighbors, depending on where you are and how many insects are in your area. The flowers will mature into seed pods and when the seed pods turn brown they will dry and open up. That is the time to collect your seed. This has been how to grow onion seeds. Thanks for watching see you next
time.
