How to Handle Verbal Abuse
ChannelBriana MacWilliamDescription from the creator
Dearest Subscriber,
Today, we address a question regarding verbal abuse in a marriage. Typically, when there is this kind of acting out in a relationship, it's because the verbally abusive partner has become emotionally flooded. In this video Kyle offers some guidance for couples on how to set up boundaries for when this occurs.
We also examine the need for establishing open communication and healthy boundaries proactively, so that a partner doesn’t become “bottled up” with unexpressed, volatile feelings.
Briana also notes that sometimes there is an organic component to experiencing a short fuse, such as in the case of undiagnosed Traumatic Brain Injury, as a result of playing sports, seemingly “harmless” car accidents, and other commonly dismissed incidents that could have an undetected impact on our executive functioning.
To learn more, checkout this brief clip of an interview with me and Kyle Benson---as we explore these topics here.
Kyle works at the “Love Lab” in Seattle, at the Gottman Institute. John Gottman is well known for conducting 40 years of research on thousands of couples, and writing the best-selling book, The 7 Principles That Make Marriage Work. Kyle is also a rockstar in his own right. His work has been featured in dozens of major media channels including Business Insider, U.S. News, The Chicago Tribune, Huffington Post, and more. Kyle studies how partners in healthy relationships intentionally – talk to each other, have passionate sex, stay emotionally connected, and more – to uncover the tools and perspectives that make love last.
