I had a mosquito problem in some standing water that I was growing water hyacinths in. I decided to just try to use some plain vegetable oil on top of the water to see if this would possibly smother the mosquito larva without damaging the plants. There are no fish in this water and I have no filter. Within 24 hours I saw lots of dead mosquito larva. So I have the liberated that vegetable oil is a cheap effective way of organically dealing with this pest.
