No matter how many times I say that learning Russian should not feel like a 100m sprint, you guys keep asking "How can I learn Russian fast?".

OK, I got it! :) 

That's why I decided to leave my romantic theories on the side and tell you how to hack Russian. 
 
I was having a conversation about language learning with Patrick Theros, an ex-US ambassador in Qatar and other Arab countries. Patrick who is passionate about languages and speaks a few said to me: "If you really want to learn the language fast you have to go to the country where they speak it. If you can't go to the country, you have to isolate yourself from other languages and surround yourself with your target language!"

He was right! This is exactly what I did myself to learn Russian!

Now, some of you can't travel to Russia. I understand that. How can you then immerse into Russian when not in Russia?

This is my recipe: 

1) Watch films/series for hooouuuurs - I remember I would watch a silly Russian series on Youtube, episode after episode, for 5-6 hours.

After such long sessions, I used to move away from my computer like a zombie! But what kind of zombie? A Russian zombie! Neither a Greek zombie (my nationality), nor an English zombie (I used to live in London)!

After such long immersion sessions you feel like Russian is your native language! You feel like the next person you'll come across is expected to speak in Russian with you! That's real immersion, ie. when you forget your native language!

2) Hunt Russians! - Not sure what city you live in, but I'm sure you can find some Russian if you search well for them! Chase these people! Where do they hang out? Find them! Stop them! Don't let them go! They are the best учебник - учитель for you!

Stop reading my books or studying vocabulary on your own. Spend time with Russians! I used to spend a whole Sunday with my Russian friends in London! After spending a few hours with them, you also feel like you're Russian yourself!

3) Italki practice - An italki lesson should be just PRACTICE! Nothing else!!! After one hour, you should feel your head burning, working 100%. And you SPEAK! That's real practice, real immersion!! If you do all the above you'll then feel motivated to book a trip to Russia. Yes, you'll do it in the end! And you'll feel Russian when you arrive because you've already immersed into their culture.

Another tip, why don't you book a trip to Ukraine if that's easier for you! I spent myself 6 months in Ukraine. They speak Russian in Kiev or Odessa. It's also easier because you don't need a visa to travel to Ukraine (for most people).

Last thing, you need to find your WHY around Russian. That's very important. You should focus on that. Not all people have the same why, the same goals and reasons for learning Russian.
