How To Mix Rabbit Feed For A Champion Program

If you remember back a week ago, Canaan put together the Suncast Compost Tumbler that we bought off Amazon. We have a barrel that we fill and then compst out near the garden over the WInter, so we won't be using the tumbler as advertised. We mix our own rabbit feed (as well as dog and bird feed). The tumbler does a great job at mixing small feed for the rabbits as it's easy to add all ingredients and give it a good turn for a thorough mixture.

There are many reasons to mix your own feed. Our primary two are to prevent disruptions from food / manufacturer reacalls and also to make sure our rabbits have a broad range of food for optimum health. You can also reduce the feed cost a little bit depending what you buy.

We use an Excel spreadsheet to calculate how many scoops of each feed to add to the tumbler for a weighted average for protein, fiber, and fat. The labels of each feed will tell you what they are individually, and then you can calculate the weighted average from the mix for your perfect blend.
