No parent wants to believe it could happen in their family, but childhood drowning is the second leading cause of death for Arizona children. Most drowning or near drowning accidents could have been prevented with simple changes—layers of barriers that include adult supervision for children at all times when they are in or near the water.

Banner Children's experts, who too often see the tragic results of water accidents, urge all adults and teens charged with protecting children to learn about and practice all recommended safety precautions, and become certified in lifesaving CPR skills .

The American Academy of Pediatrics says children can begin water safety education and early swim skills as early as age 1.
