How To Prevent Orthodontic Relapse
ChannelSarah HornsbyDescription from the creator
Orthodontic treatment should be permanent right? After all, once the braces do their work and the teeth are straight, what could possibly change that and cause a relapse?
Sadly, orthodontic relapse is something that happens a lot. I see it in my myofunctional therapy practice on a regular basis, with patients who've had braces two or even three times in their life. Each time, the results don't last and their teeth shift again. In some cases, this happens even when they diligently wear their retainer.
The reason this happens is because the underlying oral myofunctional problems that caused the orthodontic issues in the first place were never corrected. If the tongue is in the wrong place, and there's a tongue thrust swallowing pattern where the tongue pushes against the teeth over and over, well, there's no way to stop the teeth from moving once the braces or appliance are removed. I even see jaw surgeries relapse, which is a testament to the power of the tongue and other oral muscles. In this video, I'll go into more detail as to why this happens and what can be done about it.
