Description from the creator

For those who suffer with male urinary incontinence and use a male external catheter removal of the catheter can be difficult at times. Everyone’s skin is different in one way or another. Some men have a dry skin base, while others have an skin base that contains more oil than others. Both of these factors will play a role on how to remove a male external catheter.

A dry skin base will adhere to the catheter very well, but can also make the removal more difficult and can leave some adhesive residue on the skin. If this is case we suggest using an Adhesive Remover. They are offered in a wipe or moist towelette, and also in an aerosol can. The wipes are much easier to use as you can work the remover under the catheter to break down the adhesive as you roll off the catheter. It will also help you to remove any stubborn residue.

Some other methods that are useful is to use warm water and soap, a skin moisturizer, or even baby oil. Anything that will help remove a band aid will help remove the male external catheter. The one thing you do not want to do it rip it off like some do with a band aid. Here you just want to take your time. Another helpful method is to use a blunt pair of scissors and snip the band at the base of the catheter. This will allow you to gentle tear the catheter and peal it off using the Adhesive Remover Wipes methods mentioned above. It is important to make sure that the pubic hair is trimmed back as close to the skin as possible before you apply the catheter to keep it from getting caught and stick to the adhesive. This will make the removal more difficult.

Male External Catheters are designed to be worn for about 24 hours. After that time the adhesive begins to break down. So if you only wear the catheter for a few hours the adhesive inside it will still be strong and can make it difficult to remove it.

Perspiration and skin oil are factors that will break it down faster also. So if you live in a warm climate and perspire a lot these factors might not allow you to wear your catheter for a long period of time. That’s why its always important to check your skin and catheter periodically.
