Professional Step-by-Step Removal
1. Locate the Retainer

Inspect the neck of the knob, parallel to the latch. You are looking for a small, circular hole. This is your gateway to the retainer pin that secures the cylinder to the knob.

2. Position the Latch

Insert your key into the cylinder. You must turn the key slightly to retract the latch bolt. You will know you have the right position when you can feel the latch pull in. This movement aligns the internal components, allowing you to access the retainer.

3. Depress and Release

With the latch retracted and the key turned, use a specialized locksmith tool (or a small, sturdy pick) to gently depress the retainer pin through the hole. Do not use excessive force; you should feel a spring-like resistance. Once the pin is fully depressed, gently pull the cylinder (or the entire knob, depending on the specific model) away from the door.

4. Reassembly and Verification

To reinstall, reverse the process:

Insert the key to ensure the cylinder is aligned.

Slide the knob back onto the spindle.

Ensure the retainer pin clicks firmly into place.

Safety Check: Once reinstalled, always give the knob a firm, intentional pull to ensure it is locked securely onto the spindle. A loose knob is a liability you want to avoid before leaving a job site.

Pro-Tips for the Field

What if you don't have a key? If you are performing a lockout service or the key is missing, you must first pick the lock to the "operating" position. If you cannot pick the lock, you may be forced to disassemble the entire lockset from the door, which is significantly more time-consuming.

Practice makes perfect: Because there are so many variations of these locks, we recommend having a few different "junk" knobs in your workshop to practice on. Learning the "feel" of that retainer pin is a foundational skill for any professional locksmith.
