The first method to screen recording uses a built-in software called QuickTime. This method is quick and easy, and the software is very simple to use. The second method uses a free software called Active Presenter. This method is takes a few extra steps, but the software offers more options for recording and allows you to do basic edits to your recording in the same software. If you just want to see the second method, skip ahead to 2:05

To start the first method, open the QuickTime software from your Mac’s launch pad. To create a new screen recording, click File at the top of your screen, then select New Screen Recording. A small window will appear on your screen. When you’re ready to start recording, click the Record button. To record your entire screen, click anywhere on your screen and recording will begin. Or, to record just a section of your screen, click and drag to select the part of your screen you want to record, then click Start Recording. Now, do whatever it is you want to record. When you’re finished, click the Stop button in the top right corner of your screen.

To save your recording, click File, and select save. Type in what you want your recording’s file name to be and select the folder where you want to save it. Then click the blue Save button at the bottom right of the window.

For the second method, you’ll first need to download a free software called Active Presenter. Open your web browser and go to atomisystems.com/activepresenter. Click Download. Under the Mac logo, click the blue Download button. Allow the download to complete. Then click on the download at the bottom of your browser window. Allow the installer to run. Then, drag the ActivePresenter icon into your Applications folder. Now, double click on the ActivePresenter icon to launch the software.

To begin recording your screen, click Record Video on the left. To record your full screen, click Full Screen. To record just a part of your screen, click Custom. Then adjust the blue section to the part of your screen you want to record. To record your computer’s built-in webcam along with your screen recording, click Webcam. When the webcam icon turns green and says “webcam on” below it, webcam recording is enabled. To capture audio from your computer’s microphone, click on the microphone icon. When the microphone turns green and says “audio on” below it, audio recording is enabled. When you’re all ready to start recording your screen, click the record button on the right. A 3-second countdown will begin, and then recording will start.

Do whatever it is you want to record. If you’re also recording your webcam and audio, you can do real-time commentary along with your screen recording. To stop recording, click the Active Presenter icon in the top right corner to reveal recording controls. Then click Stop. Your recording will be loaded into an editing window.

Click Play to see what it looks and sounds like. If you recorded video from your webcam along with your screen recording, you can click on the webcam portion to access the option to resize the window, and click and drag it wherever you’d like it to sit on top of your screen recording. To save your recording, click Export at the top of your screen. Select Video in the top left corner.

To choose where your video file is saved, click Browse, then choose the folder you want to save it in. In the text box at the bottom of the window, type in what you want the file name to be, then click Save. Now click OK. Your video recording will be processed and exported. To watch your video, open Finder and go to the folder where you chose to save the video file, then double click on the file name to open it.
