To show collapsing categories on wordpress blog side bars you can use the plugin "Collapsing Categories List". Normally, the default widget that comes with any wordpress theme shows the categories as a dropdown list or just as a list.

If you have categories and subcategories in your blog and if you want to show them as a collapsing categories list on your side bar this video will be helpful to you. In this video I have shown how to use this plugin and add a collapsing categories list to your wordpress blog.

This plugin won't add any settings but it will add some extra options to the default categories widget. I have explained all the options in this video.
