Description from the creator

Another spelling lesson from howtospell.co.uk
In this quick lesson we're looking at dropping the 'i' in the -ai- pattern when adding certain vowel endings

For example we have explain drop the 'i' and add ation- explanation
it also changes the a long sound to a short sound explain = long - explanation = short
Also explanatory and self-explanatory the short sound makes it easier to say. Pronunciation always changes to make words easier to say.

We also drop the 'i' in Spain when talking about language and nationality. Notice the sound changes
Spain - Spaniard/ Spanish

We also have
proclaim - proclamation
reclaim - reclamation
acclaim - acclamation
prevail - prevalent

We also have another little rule where we replace the -ai- to -e- in
maintain - maintenance notice the sound change again
detain - detention
retain - retention
attain - attention
sustain - sustenance
abstain - abstention
