How to square numbers to 40 the easy way
ChannelMisterNumbersDescription from the creator
patternplaymath.com/ Square Numbers the incredible easy way by MisterNumbers on this short animated video. This is a Pattern Play math way to square numbers using one-digits and tens-digit patterns in a cool and fun approach to math.
This Right Brain Math video is an incredibly easy way to create the squares of numbers to 30, 40, to 50, or higher if you like from 2 simple patterns using the ones digits and tens digits. Are you curious?
It is helpful to create some benchmarks so you know you are on schedule
If a two digit number ends in 0, square the tensie and add 2 zeros. Put in 10 squared is 100, 20 squared is 400, and 30 squared is 900.
If a number ends in 5, multiply the tensie times t+1 and add 25 after. Examples:
15 squared: 1x2 = 2. Put 25 after it and the answer is 15 squared is 225
25 squared: 2x3 = 6. Put 25 after it and the answer is 25 squared is 625
35 squared: 3x4 = 12. Put 25 after it and the answer is 35 squared is 1225
45 squared: 4x5 = 20. Put 25 after it and the answer is 45 squared is 2025
55 squared: 5x6 = 30. Put 25 after it and the answer is 55 squared is 3025
65 squared: 6x7 = 42. Put 25 after it and the answer is 65 squared is 4225
and so forth. With zeros and fives, you have benchmarks where you can find errors on a squares table, or be able to estimate what the square of a number in-between.
Dear MisterNumbers,
Just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration for "Right Brain Math". I am a very left brained learner, but my son is right brained. He also has dyslexia and some processing issues which makes calculating slow and painful. I've really struggled with how to help him with his math. I stumbled upon your program a couple of years ago and it was a life saver for learning multiplication.
His latest task was to be able to write the squares of the numbers from 1 -- 25 in less than 3 minutes. My first thought was NO WAY. Then I remembered the EZ Times Table and figured there had to be something similar that would work for squares. I kept looking at the numbers until "viola" I saw the pattern. The only ones he has to just "know" are 0-5 (which are pretty easy), and from that he can use a pattern to figure out the rest.
This morning, I showed him the right brain way. W/in 15 minutes, he improved from 50% accuracy/taking 5 minutes or so, to 100% accuracy in under 3 minutes. Not only has his speed improved, but now he can go up to 50 and beyond in the same time he was struggling to get to 12. Can't wait to hear what the teacher says when he blows her away on his test today!
Thanks for showing that there can be an easier way! -Kelly Enser
