Although from a far distance away, it seem like the sandstorms are not moving very fast. However, sandstorm can move at an average speed of 25 miles per hour (40km/hour). Therefore, it is very possible you see them within minutes and you lose them on the next.

Sandstorms also commonly known as duststorms is caused by strong wind over loose sand or soil. Which is why it happens frequently in the deserts.

Once sandstorms occur, visibility will be greatly reduced. If you happen to be in a sandstorms, remember to put on a mask over your nose and mouth. Wear goggles to protect your eyes too! Go look for shelter or get to high ground and shield yourself from any flying objects.

Lastly, if you are walking when sandstorms is present, do not try to outrun it. Wait for it to be over. If you are in a car and the sandstorms is approaching you real fast, pull over and stop. Make sure your windows are wound up then take cover and stay put.
