How to Tell if a Watermelon is RIPE to Pick. Here, I harvest a watermelon TOO EARLY and cut it right open to show it is ALMOST-ripe. Look for the little curly stem where the watermelon meets the main vine: when that curly stem thing has shriveled up, the watermelon should be ripe enough to pick! (This one was close to ripe, but not quite yet ripe.)
