So often students are confused about how to effectively use a quote from a text when writing an essay. Should quotes be used merely for the purpose of highlighting a technique? Should they only be used once per sentence? Should I use an entire sentence as a quote? The answer to all of these questions is no.

Quotes from a text ought to be used fundamentally as evidence of a conceptual point that stems from your topic sentence (and the topic sentence should stem from your thesis, which should stem from the question). It is meant to prove a particular point. But quotes are also a way of illustrating how certain language features (i.e. techniques) have been used by a composer to create meaning, and you want to ensure you only use as much of the quote as is necessary to capture the technique and/or meaning (generally, the shorter the better). Lastly, and this is often what people forget, quotes can and should be integrated as part of your explanations of OTHER quotes so as to demonstrate a deeper engagement with the text. This video will provide an example of this final point.
