First, what is a wire transfer? Well, a wire transfer can technically be several different things, but when most people think of a wire transfer they are thinking of a transfer bank-to-bank via the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) or Fedwire. That said, a wire transfer can be to a banking institution or a non-bank institution such as Western Union.

How is it different from a check or other form of money transfer? Firstly, the wire transfer is quicker, as fast as same-day. Also, the wire transfer is much harder to undo than other forms of transfers.
