Description from the creator

How to write an adventure game in ActionScript. You can program adventure games in many different programming languages, as I've explained in previous tutorials. Here I will show how to start writing a text adventure game using the ActionScript language for Adobe Flash.

For my series on programming adventure games (in multiple programming languages) see my 'How To Program an Adventure Game' playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZHx5heVfgEvHXx6_LCT…

An in-depth article on the ActionScript project shown in this video can be found on the Bitwise Magazine web site: bitwisemag.com/2/How-to-write-an-adventure-game…

Here I show how to create a simple Room class to define each location in a game. Instead of creating a Map (an array) to hold Rooms, I show how each Room can contain references to other Room objects so that you can go straight to a named Room from the 'exit' of the current Room.

Note I have a separate video explaining some approaches to creating a 'map' of Room objects for an adventure game: youtu.be/bzhj2T3Idgc

The ActionScript languages can be used to program standalone applications using Adobe AIR or programs that are embedded into web pages. They can be created using Adobe's Flash technology or Apache's Flex framework. In this video, I create a simple Flash form-based application using SapphireSteel Software's Amethyst ActionScript IDE for Microsoft Visual Studio. You can download a trial edition of Amethyst from the SapphireSteel Software web site: sapphiresteel.com/

For a quick overview of Amethyst, see this video: youtu.be/qbVV5aLtLrg
