How To Create A Secret Society Or Guild At Larp

In this video, Maxx discusses an assassin's guild secret society he created at larp. He covers many basics of how to start a group like this, how his worked out and some pitfalls to avoid if you create your own.

If you are looking to add this depth and new dimension to a game you play, consider this:

1. Have dead drop locations for items; hollow logs, pull away bricks, under rocks, etc.

2. Have a secret handshake

3. Have secret phrases or code words and change them occasionally

4. If meta-gaming is an issue in your game, you must be extra vigilant and keep everyone's identity a secret, the easiest way is, no one speaks in large meetings, and over-sized cloaks required.

5. If you're group requires a point of contact because it offers a service, choose 1 person to be the face of the organization.

6. Hire people who don't make the cut or back out to be operatives for the group, but not actual members.

7. Have a mission statement, core values and bylaws, and follow them.

8. Require membership dues or a cut of the take

9. Require swearing an allegiance to the group

10. Give full disclosure to players before they join, even if you have to pull them out of game to discuss it more plainly, so they can make an informed decision, especially if your group is likely to put them into uncomfortable situations or scenes.

11. Be active. Even if there are no happenings with your group at an event, still meet, or have something to discuss or do.

12. If your group will be doing devious things that can impact gameplay, plot or other players, let the people running the game know that you have created such a group and if they have questions about the group, they should speak to you.

13. Know when to quit. If the group is severely compromised, or there are out of game issues, know when to shut it down. You can always make another or try again in the future.


Having a secret society can be a lot of fun and add a new dimension to a stale game, or create some additional fun for players. It's also a great way to adventure with players you may not normally associate with and make new friends. But be prepared for the commitment involved and be willing to run the group and make things enjoyable.
