- I hope you guys found this video informative! A few notes I didn't mention in the video. If you are not starting a tree farm, but want to grow a few Christmas trees for your selves or friends you must plant more trees than you need. The reason is you must plan for disease, drought, or uneven growth. There are a bunch more factors leading to trees dying. If you double or triple the amount of trees you need, you will have a much higher success rate. Also if you happen to have some trees left over some years, give them away as Christmas gifts! I also said in the video it takes 7-12 years. While that is the average time for trees 6'-12' tall. Sometimes trees may take longer. Two 8' tree may take different times to reach that size. One might take 8 years, while another might take 13 years. It could have gone through a shock earlier in life and took longer to adjust, disease, drought, too wet soils, and a bunch of other factors. Do not expect exactly 8 years for trees to be 8'. Typically trees will grow 1 foot per year. Some years it may be 8"-10" of growth per year due to not ideal conditions. Always plant more than you need! One last note. Most Conifers grow in rocky or sandy soils with a lower ph. This means little fertilizer is needed. But it is better to be safe than sorry, since Christmas trees need to be more full and look better than wild trees, you will have the best success fertilizing your trees once or twice per year with a tree fertilizer. It doesn't hurt to add some compost around the base of your trees as well.
