HOW TO: VINTAGE TEE-SHIRT!

Do it yourself distressed, cut, cool vintage look tee shirts. Follow the steps here and you can have a great looking, customised, one of a kind tee shirt for way cheaper than you can find in the shops.

If you'd like a more in-depth tutorial on how I created these customised tee-shirts, leave me a comment and I'll get onto it.

Look 1: Iron Maiden Tee
This one is super easy - all you need is a good pair of scissors. I use proper fabric scissors which are definitely worth the investment for a great end product.

1. Cut off sleeves so that the seam is discarded.
2. Mark out a “V” shape in front of tee-shirt. I used a white eye-liner so it could easily be removed.
3. Cut out 1.5cm strips across the “V” shape starting at the neckline and working your way down in ever decreasing lengths to make the “V” shape.
4. Gently pull the fabric strips lengthwise to make them curl into strips.
5. Pair tee-shirt with jeans or a skirt, add some of your favourite accessories and go out and rock it!

Look 2: AD/DC Tee
This one is a little more complicated and requires some time and patience!
Items needed: bleach, a bucket, rubber gloves, small spray bottle, eye-dropper, heavy sandpaper and fabric scissors.
*Be aware: bleach is a harsh chemical and it smells! If you are sensitive to smell, maybe don’t do this one. Also, protect your hands so that they do not come into direct contact with the bleach. This is very important.

1. Put on rubber gloves!
2. Fill bucket with water and add a cup of bleach to the water.
3. Submerge tee into the bucket and make sure it’s fully saturated.
4. Set timer for 10 mins (or less if you’d like a more subtle look) and remove tee after time is up. Rinse very well to remove any of the remaining bleachy water from the tee. (A black tee will turn brown after 10 mins!) Allow tee to dry before carrying out next steps.
5. Set tee on a protected table (place underlay of cardboard or old towel to protect surface of table– don’t do this on a fancy dining table or treated wood! Use a craft table if possible.) and take to it with sandpaper to rough up hems and create some wear and tear at the bottom – front and back.
6. Using fabric scissors, cut closely along collar to remove, stretch out once cut and you’ll have a nice wide neckline.
7. Now, being very careful of both your hands and the table underneath, drag scissors in downward strokes on the tee in places where you want extra laddering of fabric and cut tiny holes in other places. You can also cut larger slits along the base of the tee and across the sleeve to make it a little more customised to your taste. Don’t forget about the back of the tee!
8. Take spray bottle of bleach and spray carefully in areas you’d like more distressing. The bleach processes very quickly so move fast!
9. Then immediately take eyedropper of bleach and drop more concentrated amounts of bleach wherever you desire. (Do step 8 and 9 on both sides).
10. Wash thoroughly in cold water!
11. Allow it to dry.
12. Admire your work and wear your new tee!

Look 3: Nirvana Tee
Items needed: bleach, small spray bottle, eyedropper, protected surface.

1. Lay tee shirt on a protected surface - make sure either an old towel or cardboard is underneath the tee so no bleach comes in contact with the table below- you do not want to damage your table!
2. Using eyedropper, drizzle bleach in more concentrated patches to create a splotchy effect.
3. Spray additional bleach over the splotches or in different spots of your choice to create more colour change of fabric
4. Repeat on other side of tee.
5. Wash thoroughly with cold water to remove all traces of bleach and drip dry.
6. Go out and wear your cool, new (but old), one of a kind tee shirt!

Look 4: Kylie Tee
For this style, there are no limits! It’s all about cutting the tee shirt however you like. Make some cuts, try it on and see how it looks, cut some more and repeat as many times as you like until you’re satisfied with the finished product. There are no rules! If you make a mistake, just go with it!
Items needed: fabric scissors

1. Lay tee on hard surface and start cutting away. I cut a half-moon shape just under front and back centre of the collar and cut away into the shoulders. I also added slashes in the side of the tee, the sleeves and a couple little slashes at the very bottom near the hem on one side.
2. I also cut a few little holes (tiny) near the side neckline for just a little extra detail. You can do whatever you like! No limits.
3. Keep trying on the tee as you go so you know if you want to add more or if you’ve arrived at the finished product.
4. Wear your creation!
