In Japanese, foreigners’ names are usually not written in kanji(Chinese characters), but rather often presented in katakana, one of Japan’s alphabets.

When the name Adrian is written in katakana, it appears like this: エイドリアン (EI-DO-RI-AN)

We search for kanji that can be read the same way, and using those phonetic characters, we create a name in kanji.

This time we created the following name in Kanji: 英努理安

英 can be read as “EI,” and means “England” or “excellent.”

努 can be read as “DO,” and means “make an effort.”

理 can be read as “RI,” and means “reason” or “a principle.”

安 can be read as “AN,” and means “be [feel] rested” or “peace of mind.”

When we combine the kanji 英+努+理+安 Adrian’s name in kanji (英努理安) is then complete.

It’s possible that Japanese people won’t recognize the phonetic reading of 英努理安 (Adrian’s kanji) right away, but when presented together with furigana (the katakana pronunciation), they will surely understand.
