Clay Mushrooms | Amanita Mushroom | Polymer Clay Tutorial
Hey everyone, welcome back to clueless crafts.
Today I'll be showing you how to make some clay mushrooms.
Now just a heads up, I did make some dumb mistakes on the first mushroom I made, but fear not, for I did correct my blunders on the second mushroom.
So keep watching, and feel free to ignore the order in which I do some of these steps. Alright, here we go.
I first start off with a ball of purple clay, then pinch all the way around and press the edges against a flat surface so it’s a dome like shape.
And here would be what you’d call mistake number one. I started placing tiny pieces of clay on the mushroom head with a toothpick. I suppose not entirely wrong, but it’ll make the next step a lot harder.
Speaking of, the next step is to take a small ball of white clay, flatten it a bit then press into the underside of the mushroom. Using your fingers, you will smooth out the edges to create a seamless look, which would be a lot easier if there weren’t a million tiny pieces of clay on the top that you are trying and failing not to squish.
So yeah, probably should have saved that first step for later. Now you know, though you probably already knew that, but this isn’t called clueless crafts crafts for nothing huh?
Anyway, using a flat edged tool, or even a toothpick, create lines all pointing towards the center of the mushroom, and do this all the way around.
With that done, take another ball of clay and roll it into a log, making sure to taper one end, leaving the base nice and thick. Now take a thinner log and squish it down til it’s nice and flat. I have a roller but i guess I liked my finger better. Another mistake for the book.
Now rough up one of the edges using a toothpick. I did not though, and I regret it, though I think it's mostly my poked fingers that regret it. Just use a toothpick.
Yet another mistake was leaving the ends uncut. Cut your edges.
But once it's on, blend the line and flick up the rough edge so it flares away a bit.
Finally just dab a messy glob of liquid Sculpey on to connect the two pieces together, using a toothpick to connect the edges if it's not secure.
I attempted to make another mushroom, this time trying the steps in an order that actually made sense. Notice how i’m doing the under side first, leaving my fingers to freely touch the mushroom head with no fear of ruining all my previous work.
Now with the bottom done, let’s do something else different. Let’s clean all of my fingerprints off. I’m just using a q-tip dipped in 100% pure acetone. Works like a charm. Now I can place all the tiny pieces of clay with no worries.
And for the stem, I made it less bulky, seeing as my previous one had no curves to it, and I gotta have curves.
Also take note I actually used a roller to flatten this one, eliminating all the finger prints I had on the other one. I’m using using a toothpick because apparently that’s the level of sharpness i can handle, but it also gives a nice finish, in my opinion.
Anyway, all the other steps are the same, blend the edge, flick the skirt up lol, a dab of liquid Sculpey, and join the two pieces together. Place the mushrooms on whatever you're using as an oven tray and if necessary, use a ball of tin foil to prop them up. I also made a few others in different colours as well.
The type of clay used in this video is Sculpey and Fimo. I use what’s available as most brands are similar to each other. Always follow your clay’s baking instructions on the package when making clay creations. I baked mine at 225 degrees in a non preheated oven for 15-20 minutes. Leave to cool in the oven before handling them as they are still soft and handling them may leave dents.
If you have any questions just leave them in the comments below and I’ll be happy to answer them. Any suggestions on what you want to see next are always welcome too :)
Hope you have a great rest of your day!
