In brief

This tutorial from Sea Lemon guides you through case binding a hardcover book, a method that attaches a sturdy cover to a pre-made text block. You’ll use materials like book cloth, glue, and a bone folder to create a polished, professional-looking book perfect for scrapbooking, journals, or preserving photos. The process is adaptable—Jennifer shares her approach, but encourages personal tweaks to suit your style.

Questions & answers

What if my cover material is thick (e.g., 2mm)?

Add the material’s thickness to the ‘gap width’ when measuring to ensure the cover hangs properly over the text block.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to case bind a hardcover book. I've found there are many variations of case binding methods. None are necessarily better than others, they are just slightly different and up to your personal preference. This is what has worked for me so far, but I'm always learning. You're welcome to make your own variations based on my tutorial to suite your own preference.

❋ IMPORTANT TIP ❋
Whatever material you use for the cover (fabric or paper), if it is really thick, you should add the width of it (ex. 2mm) to the "gap width". This will compensate for the thickness and allow the cover to still hang over the text block.
