In non-gravity fed systems, a fuel pump is necessary to channel liquid through lines into the engine. Low-pressure systems go to a carburetor and high-pressure systems go to fuel injectors.

Fuel pumps inside fuel tanks get the added benefit of being cooled by the liquid petrol. On newer vehicles, the electronic control unit or ECU can shut down the fuel pump in the event of a collision or when there is zero or low oil pressure.

A lot of people were upset that fuel injection practically makes carburetion obsolete. It is a change that hurts feelings.
