For NRIs and OCIs, a PAN card is a necessary document. It is a 10-digit unique identification number also known as a 'permanent account number' that is associated with a person's demographic and biometric data with Income department of India.

The pan card system was established in 1987. Originally, it was utilized to collect tax revenue from non-resident Indians (NRIs). The name "pan card" is derived from "Permanent Account Number," which is an alphanumeric identity issued by the Indian government to every resident. In addition, non-residents who reside outside of India are now needed to do any form of investment or financial transaction in India. Notably, an Aadhaar or UID card is not required for an NRI to apply for an Indian PAN number.

A pan card is a document that enables Indian and foreign people resident in India or abroad, including OCI, PIO, and foreign citizens, access to a number of services and benefits. The Indian Income Tax Department issues what is frequently referred to as the "Indian identification card."

As an NRI, you have two options for applying for a pan card:

1. By applying directly on the following government websites:

The PAN card serves as an official form of identity for both Indian citizens and non-resident Indians (including OCI card holders and foreign nationals). It is issued by the Indian government to all Non-Resident Indians who reside outside of India. Similarly, non-residents can open a bank account and make financial activities in India with their pan card.

A PAN card is obtained differently by a non-resident Indian than by an Indian citizen. The processing and issuance of NRI applications takes between four and six weeks. In contrast, the e-PAN card arrives within three to four days. In contrast, Indian citizens must wait around three days for their pan cards to be processed and issued.
