Crash avoidance is a last resort. And often, drivers get into a crash because they don't know the fundamentals of crash avoidance:

• reduce speed as much as possible
• do not follow the trajectory of the intersecting vehicle
• steer to the outside of your lane - if you drive to the right, move right; if you drive on the left, move to the left
• move to avoid hitting the object "straight on" if a crash is imminent

Good following distance and scanning techniques will prevent most crashes. However, there will be times that crash avoidance is unavoidable.
