Description from the creator

Hey Si Boarders! It’s Elysia, and welcome back to the Si Boratory, and today, we’re going to ship out a DIY Creator Kit, Starter Edition. This is the same rail that comes on our Starter Boards, but you can get your very own kit and make your own board. We have a new rider, and she got a Freestyle blank for her boyfriend, and I asked her if she wanted me to pre-drill the holes, and she said yes, so let’s get going.

Here it is! A completely raw, Freestyle starter. Beautiful, beautiful board. It’s awesome. The Starter kit is going to come with a rail that you can extend from either 16 inches or to 20. I’m going to drill the holes for the 20 inch, and that’ll go on here like that.

First things first, we’re going to make a template. We’re going to trace it out, mark the rail holes. Okay, and voilà!

1:04
One trick you can do to make sure that all the rail holes are going to line up perfectly is to put a straight edge down and make sure that the holes are on the line. And now, it’s time to cut out this template.

1:23
Okay, so that wasn’t very precise, but you know, it’ll do the trick. And what you could do is put your rail directly on there and mark your holes from there.

1:32
Now here’s the question: how do you know if your rail is on the board centered, if you want it centered. Well, the easiest trick is to just measure from the ends. Now I’m centered left and right, and now to find the edges. I’m going to do the same thing.

1:54
And the template is centered on here! We’ve got about 8 ¼ on the ends and about 4 ½ on the width. So I’m going to tape this down so it doesn’t move, in the gusty, gusty winds.

2:09
And it’s time to mark. I like to use a pin and my big’o sludge hammer! That’s like four time in a row, four times we’re going to do the joke. If you don’t have a pin, you can use a marker, and mark.

2:24
I designed the rail to have some adjustment to the bolt hole, just in case you didn’t drill quite perfectly and have a little adjustment. So you have this amount of area to figure out where you want to put in your bolt hole. I’m not going to go to the center. I’m going to a little bit to the edge so that I can catch more of that edge on the nut. And the same thing with the edges.

2:45
(Or Mark holes from ruler distance)

2:51
Okay, we’re going to double check that now. And we are good! A second option is that you can put the rail directly on here and mark with the rail on there.

3:03
And over to the drill press, but first! Not without our safety glasses!

3:11
Alrighty! 3/16 inch bit drill bit with a countersink to put in the nice angle. We got scrap wood underneath here, and here we go!

3:44
Okay! And just a quick little sand. Make sure it’s nice and smooth around the holes. You’ll also notice that the bottom holes are not blown out, because I had a piece of scrap wood underneath. This birch plywood is so beautiful! Baltic birch, which is the best from Russia. It is such beautiful, beautiful wood.

4:16
Are you ready to jump on board? All this board needs is a sanding sealer coat, your creative artwork, some grip, grip tape, or a grip coat, and the rail. The hardware comes with a kit, and you’ll also get a 3 inch mini ball. So you are ready to go, and in about a half hour, you’ll be up and riding and creating your own destiny. Wow!

4:39
Thanks for hanging out at the Siboratory. If you have any questions about your Creator Kits, drilling out your raw board, or anything Si Boards related, leave it in the comments, and I’ll get back to you. And as always, keep on breaking the rules!
