How to build porch railings
ChannelGetGoTVDescription from the creator
In this video you will learn how I build porch railings. First of all I remove the old rotted or damaged ones. Then we replace any post that might need replacing. Next I use two by fours treated to make a top railing in between the posts. A 2 by 6 can be substituted for the two by four so that things like flower pots can be set on top. Next I lay at the pickets. Starting in the middle between the posts and a Center Point I install the first picket and make sure it's level. When making the picket I cut a 45 degree angle cut on one end. I do not install the pickets between the two by four railings at the top and bottom because this causes wood right especially when you put caulking on it because this traps moisture. If you notice that old buildings were built they were built with no caulking. so I only caught between the railing and the column on the top and sides but not the bottom to allow water to escape. after the first picket is level I use a 2 x 4 block as a spacer for installing the rest of the pickets. This makes the job go a lot faster and as long as the first picket is level all of the rest of the pickets will come out perfect. When doing the stair railings I set 4 x 4 posts in the ground about a foot deep. I also attached to post to the brick steps with half-inch galvanized concrete anchors with sleeves. Using a masonry bit I drill two holes in the step period using a half inch bit I drill two holes in the post. Using Lee 1 inch paddle bit I create a countersink area over the whole so that the bolt head and the nut and washer or flush with the post. Once the nuts or crank down tight I take a grinder or a Sawzall and cut them off flush then I put 40 lb of concrete in the hole. I also use pl7 adhesive to attach the post to the steps. When getting the angle for the railings between the post on your steps lay a two-by-four down so that it touches all of the edges of the steps on one side of your to post. Using a pencil Mark the angle against the post. Cut the first railing for the left side then use that pieces of template to make a second one for the top. Then put a hand railing top on top of the top to buy for using the same procedure. Repeat the same steps on the opposite side. It is important when using treated lumber to use galvanized fasteners. Also you want to allow the wood to dry out for the proper amount of time for several weeks. Once the wood is dry and everything is built paint everything twice with a good paint that has a built-in primer. My choice of paint would be Bher Ultra. My second choice would be Clarks and Kensington.
