this video ladies and gentlemen we will conceptually go over the process of how to start investing in the stock market if you never invested before.
You are about to see how simple this actually is.
Just to be clear this video has nothing to do with how to analyze stocks, we are not discussing the economy in this video. Those are different subjects for a different day. This is purely about how to start investing in the stock market.
To start investing the first thing you need is money.
For the majority of Americans the money to invest comes from a job and receiving a paycheck.
Of course in the real world you do not want your money coming to you in the form a check. A much better alternative is direct deposit, and you will see why that is important in just a moment.
Step 1
After you received your paycheck, and if budgeted your finances appropriately you should have money left over at the end of month to invest.
Now incase you didn’t catch it that was the hardest part about this whole process, and i’m not trying to be sarcastic. For most people their largest challenge when it comes to investing is actually having money left over at the end of the money to invest.
If you do not have enough money left over at the end of month to invest than you need to not worry about investing at all at this point and put all of your effort on increasing your income and reducing your expenses, debt, etc. That is what I would recommend for most people.
If you need a budget spreadsheet to help you better budget your finances. I have a free excel template you can download to help you with that. I’ll also link up a video showing how my wife and I are able to save over 50% of our net income. Let's move on
Step 2
Now it's time to choose an investment platform.
When it comes to choosing an investment platform you have numerous options. You can go with Vanguard, Fidelity, Robinhood, Ameritrade, e-trade, m-1 finance, your bank might have their own investing platform Lets just say you have lots and lots of choice. When it comes to choosing a platform a few things to consider are:
Commission and fee structure of the platform.
How user friendly the platform is - Do you understand how the platform works. Do you like the research tools, charts, etc.
How sophisticated of an investor you want to be. I’m really talking about features of the platform here. Not all platforms will allow you to short-selling, buy options, etc if that is something you want to do so make sure you know what the platform can do or can’t before choosing a platform.
Step 3 - setting up a brokerage account
All in all the full process will probably take you an hour or two to get everything setup. It will probably take a about a week to setup everything up however.
Step 4 - Transfer money from your checking to the brokerage account. Just like a bank account your brokerage account will have a cash or money market account where your money will sit until you are ready to invest it. Keep in mind that it might take a day or so for the money to clear the bank and be ready for you to invest.
Step 5 - Time to start purchasing investments.
This is part is easiest part of the whole process in my opinion. All you now is search the company or ticker symbol of the company you want to invest in.
Determine how many shares you want to purchase.
And click purchase or buy
The money will be deducted from your cash balance and your investment will now show up here:
From here on out you will receive monthly statements that will show your cash balance of your brokerage account, what you are invested in, your unrealized capital gain or loss. Amount of dividends you received etc.
Selling the investments is just as easy as buying them.
