A simple and easy to perform maintenance task that most homeowners can do to their air handlers or furnaces is to change the disposable air filter.

Your 1" disposable air filter should be changed on a monthly basis and usually the air filters are located on the left, right, or bottom of the furnace where the air enters the air handler.

The one in our video is underneath the air handler and the door is usually labeled with the words "AIR FILTER" or "FILTER" and s usually secured with thumb screws or hex-head bolts.

Once the door is removed you will be able to remove the old air filter and dispose of it. The new air filter will go into the same place, but make sure that the "air-flow" directional arrow is pointing in the correct direction that the air will be flowing through your system. You want the side of the filter with the wire mesh to be on the up or inside so the filter will be held together during operation while air is flowing through it.

It is also good practice to date your air filter with the day of installation on it so down the road you know when it was installed and when you need to replace it. Like we said earlier it is recommended that you replace your air filters monthly for highest efficiency and best airflow.

Replace the filter door and secure it with the screws.

Now you're all set for the next month of comfortable heating and air conditioning in your home! Make sure you write on your calendar the next day that your air filter is going to need changed.
